Mary Woesner, MD, is an esteemed psychiatrist and educator
She has dedicated her career to treating people with mental illness and to the education of psychiatry residents and medical students. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (AECOM), Bronx, New York, and Director of Medical Student Training at the Bronx Psychiatric Center. She is board certified in psychiatry and is a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA).
Her education awards include the APA’s Nancy C.A. Roeske, MD, Certificate of Excellence in Medical Student Education and membership in the Leo M. Davidoff Society of AECOM for “Outstanding Achievement in the Teaching of Medical Students.” Her most recent teaching commendation was in 2025. Dr. Woesner completed her psychiatric residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/BPC and the New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center/WD. She completed a fellowship in schizophrenia at the New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center/WD and a fellowship in education at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She received her M.D. degree from the SUNY at Downstate Medical Center College of Medicine and her B.A. with honors from SUNY at Binghamton.
Dr. Woesner has published and presented at national meetings in her areas of expertise, which include the treatment of psychiatric disorders such as psychosis and dementia, medical student education, and the use of firsthand accounts to educate patients, families, and trainees about mental illness. One of her career goals has been to present and publish articles with students, for their own career advancement. Nearly half her articles are co-published with medical students she taught and mentored.
She has many interests outside of Medicine. In the late 1990s, she founded “History for Our Children” (HOC), a not-for-profit educational and activist organization working for historic preservation on Long Island, NY. HOC fought—unsuccessfully—to save a historic ancestral home. This was documented in local papers and a New York Times Article: https://www.nytimes.com/1997/08/10/realestate/preserving-the-past-in-the-presence-of-the-new.html HOC went on to help save a historic town theater and, for this, she was named a Citizen of the Year by the town newspaper.
Dr. Woesner was a caregiver to her father with dementia. When he died in 2009, her husband’s dementia—already present—worsened and she became a full-time care partner with her husband. It took fortitude and knowledge and deepened their relationship (Dementia—The Physician Caregiver and Identity | Humanities | JAMA Neurology | JAMA Network). She immersed herself in writings and blogs and connected with other caregivers. Given her prior clinical experience and her decades-long personal experience, she has evolved into an expert on the caregiving experience. She has written a memoir and firsthand account, to be published.
